Grants, NM to Albuquerque NM. 79.4 miles and 1673 feet of climbing

It was nice and chilly this morning when we set out from our hotel in Grants, NM, headed for Albuquerque. For the first 30 miles, we rode on Historic Route 66.  Cruising down the smooth road, the majestic rock formations in the distance provided a dramatic backdrop to the numerous abandoned gift shops, cafes, and gas stations we passed. All relics of a bygone era. I couldn't help but think of Radiator Springs in Cars Land at Disney's California Adventure. Back before the Interstate highway system was built, Route 66 was a primary route for people migrating west. It starts in Chicago and ends in Santa Monica, CA, passing through eight states in the process. There was very little traffic, which made for a wonderful, stress-free morning ride.

After our first SAG stop at 30 miles, we got back on I-40 and headed east for another 30 miles. There was a second SAG about 25 miles out of town and a nice little climb to start the final leg into Albuquerque.
Upon arriving in the city, I made a beeline to a Subway restaurant about 1 mile from our hotel. After re-fueling on "The Boss" sandwich ( look it up on the Subway site), I rode the final few blocks to the Holiday Inn Express.

Vincenzo, our Italian friend, signed up only to do this first leg, so sadly, he will depart tomorrow morning. Tonight at dinner, I am sure they will do something special to see him off. I'll miss his calm, good-natured demeanor, and friendly smile. But at least where he is going, he will be able to get a decent plate of pasta for a change. He says he plans to return next year to do the next leg of this trip.

I ate my sandwich about 2 hours ago, and as I type this, I'm already hungry. Dinner tonight is across the street at Applebee's.

The Giant bike I purchased in Palm Desert has performed very well, considering I had all of 15 mins to pick it out, and it was essentially the only bike in the shop that was close to the right size for me.
Considering the extenuating circumstances, I think I'm very fortunate to be on a bike that I can ride long distances and be pain-free.

Tomorrow it is on to Santa Fe. Saturday is a rest day, time to check out some of the art galleries.....and do laundry.

Arrivederci Vincenzo!
